Taiwan Is Dark Until Tuesday. TSM and Chip ETFs Carry the Price.

Market Snapshot

Taiwan shut its stock market, schools, and offices on Friday as Typhoon Champi barreled toward the island. The exchange will also be closed Monday for a holiday, giving the island an additional trading gap compared with other markets in the region. Taiwan reopens Tuesday, October 27, meaning TSMC’s primary listing gets four days off the screen.

Champi was packing top sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour, equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane, after weakening over the past 24 hours from super typhoon strength. The storm is forecast to pass just east of Taipei early Saturday before turning north toward Japan’s southwestern islands. The typhoon caused hundreds of flight cancellations and power outages for tens of thousands of homes.

Stock market settlements scheduled for Friday will be postponed to the next business day, the Taiwan Stock Exchange said. Monday’s closure is the observed substitute holiday for Taiwan Restoration Day, which falls on Sunday this year.

Stocks in Focus

The US-listed TSM is the only place to trade TSMC news on Friday and Monday. That matters because the ADR had already absorbed a rough session: TSM closed at $412.35, down 4.52% on Thursday, as tech selling hit semiconductor names across the region. The tech-heavy exchange, along with South Korea and Japan, has sold off recently as investors track earnings from global tech giants. A Tuesday open in Taipei will reveal whether domestic institutions agree with where the ADR has priced the stock.

Manufacturing at the primary semiconductor plants in Hsinchu paused on October 23 as local governments closed offices. The storm may bring up to 900mm of rain, though it is expected to skim the northeast coast rather than make a direct landfall, and there are currently no reports of production disruption or physical damage to TSMC’s fabrication plants.

Beyond TSM, traders should track UMC (NYSE: UMC) and Hon Hai’s OTC-quoted depositary shares (HNHPF). Both primary listings sit on the TWSE and will not clear a fresh price until Tuesday. Any material news between now and then lands first in the US-listed instruments.

Sector Watch

Chip ETFs are doing the heaviest work. TSM represents about 9.4% of the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH), which has about $74.9 billion in total assets as of October 21. SOXX holds TSM at roughly 3% of its portfolio. SMH’s Taiwan weighting means it will absorb the bulk of any sentiment shift before the TAIEX opens again. Watch the spread between SMH and SOXX over Friday and Monday: a widening gap would signal the market is specifically pricing Taiwanese foundry exposure rather than semiconductors broadly.

While large-scale semiconductor fabrication plants typically operate with robust backup power and safety protocols, the widespread power outages highlight the scale of the infrastructure disruption. Any delay in the movement of raw materials or finished products due to transport closures could create temporary bottlenecks in the technology supply chain.

Risk Radar

  • Price gap on Tuesday open. Four days of accumulated news flow, earnings reactions from US tech peers, and any post-storm damage assessments will hit Taiwan’s market simultaneously when it reopens. The wider the TSM ADR moves between now and Tuesday’s close, the sharper the potential catch-up in Taipei.
  • Supply chain uncertainty. Airfreight shipments involving electronics and semiconductor components may require closer monitoring as airlines adjust operations. Flight cancellations could reduce available cargo capacity and create temporary shipment backlogs.
  • Taiwan dollar. The Taiwan dollar weakened this week, weighed down by foreign capital outflows. No domestic market open means that pressure has nowhere to clear until Tuesday.

The Cheat Sheet

  • Top Market Theme: A four-day blackout in the world’s most important semiconductor market is concentrating all price discovery into a handful of US-listed proxies.
  • Stock to Watch: TSM. It is the only live venue for TSMC positioning through Monday. Volume and direction Friday and Monday set the expectations Taipei must either confirm or reject on Tuesday.
  • Sector to Watch: Semiconductors, specifically through SMH versus SOXX spread behavior. SMH’s heavier Taiwan exposure makes it the more sensitive read.
  • Biggest Risk: A material gap between where TSM ADR trades through Monday and where Taipei prices things Tuesday. That mismatch creates short-term dislocation across any strategy touching TSMC.
  • Biggest Opportunity: If post-storm assessment confirms no production disruption at Hsinchu, a relief trade in TSM and SMH on Tuesday could be fast and sharp.
  • One Thing to Remember: Taiwan reopens Tuesday, October 27. Mark it. Everything the market learns between now and then settles at that open.
